  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q.    Does Yoga make you fit ?

A.  It depends what you mean by 'fit'. It will improve balance, strength (in some cases stamina), focusing and concentration but it is not generally regarded as an aerobic exercise, so if you looking to loose weight it would be better to combine yoga with a safe aerobic exercise such as swimming, walking, etc.

Q.   Is there an age limit ?

A.  There is no age limit, although it is said that some of the stronger/more strenuous forms of yoga were designed primarily for people below the age of 70. There is a very wide variety of methods and styles taught catering for all ages, levels of fitness and disabilities. A competent teacher modifies their approach to cater for age, disability, etc.

Q. What should I wear  ?

A.   You can wear anything that is loose and comfortable ~ some people wear T-shirts and shorts, some prefer wearing a tracksuit, some women opt for leotard. You want to wear something that you feel at ease in and that will not restrict movement. Most classes work bare foot.

Q.    Do I need any equipment ?

A.   We always encourage people to purchase a non-slip mat and a support block ~ your yoga teacher should be able to advise you of suitable stockists/suppliers. Most teachers recommend students to bring blanket or a large towel which (a) can sometimes be used as a posture aid/prop and (b) helps to conserve body heat during any relaxation sessions.

Q.   How long does a yoga class last  ?

A.   The length of the class varies from one hour through to two hour classes. Typically most classes are from 1½ to 2 hours and there are some that offer a lunchtime class of one hour.

Q.    What is the cost of a class

A.   The cost of classes varies dependent on the length of the class, venue, etc. The classes run by Adult Education are probably the cheapest and classes in Sports Centres are usually a bit more expensive. Private classes are usually more expensive than group classes. There are some classes that are 'drop-in' classes where you pay on the door but these are usually limited to sports centres and lunchtime classes
